Government turns sod for $1.5B Pourderyen Market in Region Three

The government has turned the sod for a new $1.5 billion market at Pourderyen in Region Three, which is expected to provide improved facilities for vendors and expand commercial opportunities for residents and shoppers across the region.

The sod-turning ceremony was held on Saturday, marking the start of construction of the two-storey market, which will accommodate 145 vendors, compared with the 78 vendors currently registered at the existing market.

The market will take 18 months to be completed.

Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand said the project is part of broader investments being made to improve communities and modernise public facilities across Region Three.

“This is one of three markets that is going up across the region,” the minister said, pointing to ongoing works at Parika, Hydronie and Leonora, as well as planned developments at Zeelugt and Tuschen.

The local government minister explained that the project is being executed through four lots by four contractors, with the works to be supervised internally and externally by a consultant.

According to the minister, the investment is expected to generate wider economic activity in the community by attracting shoppers from neighbouring areas.

“Once this is up and running, you’re going to see a range of four people from the East Bank coming right here to shop. And that is going to bring a different kind of economy and co-structure financially to your villages and to this village in particular,” she said.

Minister Manickchand also assured existing vendors that their livelihoods would be considered during construction, with a relocation plan to address temporary movement while works are ongoing.

A temporary tarmac area is expected to be constructed first to accommodate the vendors during construction, while existing vendors will receive priority when spaces are allocated in the completed market.

The project is part of the government’s plan to improve markets and community infrastructure.

The minister urged contractors to adhere to the agreed timelines and contractual requirements, noting that measures including liquidated damages would be applied where contractors fail to meet their obligations.

The new market is expected to provide a more modern and expanded space for vendors while creating a stronger commercial hub for residents and consumers in Region Three.
