The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has commenced its second round of verification of speed cameras installed along Guyana’s roadways, as part of efforts to ensure the devices remain accurate and reliable when enforcing speed limits.

This is according to GNBS’ Head of Legal Metrology Services Department, Shailendra Rai, during an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI) on Monday.

The agency has so far completed approximately 20 speed-camera verifications for 2026. The verification exercise, which is conducted every six months, is being carried out across the country.

GNBS has already completed checks along the East Coast and in Georgetown and is currently conducting verifications along the East Bank of Demerara.

According to Rai, the exercise involves testing the overhead speed cameras to determine whether they are functioning properly and accurately recording vehicles’ speed.

He explained that where a camera is found to be malfunctioning or recording inaccurately, it would be removed from service until the necessary repairs or adjustments are completed.

“Most of the time, it is not really a functionality issue…probably its reading is off, and it is basically an adjustment that has to be done and then we re-verify it,” Rai stated.

The verification programme will continue along the East Bank, including cameras located around connecting roads such as Greenfield and Massey Road, before moving to the West Coast, where several other overhead cameras are installed.
