A massive search-and-rescue operation is underway after the passenger ferry MV Barima capsized off Guyana’s northern coast late Saturday night, leaving dozens of passengers feared dead or missing in one of the country’s worst maritime disasters in recent years.

The vessel, carrying 133 passengers and crew, was travelling from Georgetown to Port Kaituma when it encountered distress approximately seven miles offshore. Authorities received a distress signal shortly after 11:00 p.m., triggering an extensive rescue effort involving the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Coast Guard, private vessels, local fishermen and aircraft.

Officials confirmed that 67 people have been rescued, including women and children, while search teams continue to comb the surrounding waters for those still unaccounted for. Rescue efforts have been hampered by poor visibility, strong currents and challenging sea conditions, but operations have continued around the clock.

The Government of Guyana has mobilised additional resources, including helicopters, divers and offshore support vessels equipped with advanced scanning technology, to expand the search area. Medical teams have also been deployed to provide treatment and support to survivors, while counselling services have been made available for affected families.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the tragedy. Investigators are examining the vessel’s condition, the accuracy of the passenger manifest, weather conditions and the actions of the crew before and during the emergency. Officials say accountability will follow if any negligence or safety violations are uncovered.

The sinking has shocked the nation, with messages of sympathy and support pouring in from across Guyana and the wider Caribbean. As families anxiously await news of their loved ones, hopes remain that additional survivors may still be found.

The search operation remains active, and officials have pledged to continue recovery efforts until every missing passenger has been accounted for.
