Ecuador produced one of the biggest shocks of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage by defeating Germany 2–1 in a dramatic encounter in New York/New Jersey.
Germany started strongly and took the lead early through Leroy Sané in just the 2nd minute, putting Ecuador under immediate pressure. However, Ecuador responded quickly, equalizing in the 9th minute through Nilson Angulo, who finished calmly after a fast attacking move that unsettled the German defense.
The match remained intense and evenly contested for much of the game, with both sides creating chances. The decisive moment arrived in the 77th minute when Gonzalo Plata scored the winner from close range following a well-delivered corner kick by Kevin Rodríguez.
Despite Germany dominating possession at times, Ecuador’s defensive discipline and counterattacking threat proved decisive. The result confirmed Ecuador’s qualification for the Round of 32, marking a major milestone for the team in their World Cup campaign.
