PPP/C General Secretary and Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has issued a strong warning to Guyanese about the opposition’s manipulation tactics and false claims, especially the People’s National Congress (PNC), a major party in the APNUAFC coalition.
Dr. Jagdeo emphasized the opposition’s aim to divide the nation and urged vigilance against their schemes. He delivered this message during an event at Babu Jaan in Corentyne Berbice, held to honour the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan, the founder and former president of the party.
Addressing a large crowd of supporters, party members, and government officials at Babu Jaan in Corentyne Berbice, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted the opposition’s tendency to manipulate people’s emotions. He emphasized that this tactic has historically been used to keep people under control, appealing to their emotions rather than focusing on the progress the country is making.
VP Jagdeo highlighted how the opposition has often used racism as their primary tool to oppose the PPP/C Government. However, the government’s actions and initiatives demonstrate that these accusations are unfounded and fabricated lies.
During the coalition government’s tenure, Afro-Guyanese and other ethnic groups in Guyana faced significant hardships despite the opposition’s claims of supporting them. Jagdeo emphasized that the treatment of Afro-Guyanese under the PNC government was particularly harsh, indicating an elitist attitude among a select few.
Furthermore, the previous government left thousands of sugar workers, young Amerindians, bauxite workers, and other Guyanese without employment opportunities.
In contrast, Jagdeo pointed out that the PPP’s policies and programs benefit all Guyanese, regardless of race. He noted the inclusivity of PPP activities and highlighted the diverse support base at their gatherings, which starkly contrasts the opposition’s approach.
The vice president exposed numerous falsehoods and misleading information spread by the opposition, stressing the importance of Guyanese being vigilant. He warned that this behaviour could hinder Guyana’s progress as a nation.
According to him, there’s a danger of the opposition succeeding in dividing the people once again by appealing to their emotions and spreading misinformation. He cautioned against a return to the divisive tactics of the past, particularly regarding corruption allegations against the PPP.
The general secretary reiterated that the party’s policies and initiatives are rooted in the people-centered philosophy established by the late former president. He emphasized the importance of remaining faithful to this philosophy, which has guided successful leaders in implementing policies beneficial to the people.
Sunday’s ceremony commemorated the 106th birth anniversary and 27th death anniversary of Dr. Jagan, founder of the PPP party ,a prominent freedom fighter and revered figure in Guyana’s history.
