The Commonwealth Games has long been a stage where nations showcase their sporting excellence across multiple disciplines. Since its inception in 1930, the Games have brought together athletes from Commonwealth nations to compete at the highest level while promoting friendship, unity, and sportsmanship. Beyond every edition, one of the most closely watched indicators of success is the all-time Commonwealth Games medal rankings, which reflect decades of consistent performances by participating countries.
Australia remains the undisputed leader in the history of the Commonwealth Games. With more than 2,500 medals, including over 1,000 gold medals, Australia has established itself as the most successful nation in the competition’s history. Its continued dominance is driven by exceptional performances in swimming, athletics, cycling, and other Olympic sports.
England occupies second place in the all-time standings, boasting a remarkable record across athletics, gymnastics, boxing, and swimming. As one of the founding members of the Games, England has consistently finished among the top nations and continues to challenge Australia for overall supremacy.
Canada ranks third, thanks to decades of excellence in athletics, swimming, cycling, and wrestling. The country has maintained its position among the Commonwealth’s sporting powerhouses through strong athlete development programs and consistent international success.
India has emerged as one of the fastest-rising nations in Commonwealth Games history. Now ranked fourth in the all-time medal table, India has accumulated more than 560 medals through outstanding performances in weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, badminton, shooting, table tennis, and athletics. India’s rise reflects significant investment in sports infrastructure, coaching, and athlete development over the past two decades.
New Zealand completes the top five, consistently producing world-class athletes in athletics, cycling, rowing, and rugby sevens. Despite its relatively small population, the nation has built a reputation for punching above its weight on the international sporting stage.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games saw Australia once again finish at the top of the medal table, while England, Canada, India, and New Zealand remained among the leading nations. Although the 2026 Games featured a reduced sports programme, athletes continued to deliver memorable performances that strengthened their countries’ positions in the all-time rankings. India finished fourth in the 2026 medal standings with 39 medals, highlighting its expanding strength across a wider range of sports.
Looking ahead, attention has shifted to Ahmedabad, India, which is set to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The event presents India with an opportunity to improve its all-time medal tally further while showcasing its growing sporting infrastructure and organizational capabilities on the global stage.
The Commonwealth Games world rankings represent far more than medal counts. They reflect decades of dedication, investment, and sporting excellence. As new generations of athletes emerge and nations continue to develop their sporting ecosystems, the race for higher positions in the all-time rankings promises to become even more competitive in future editions of the Games.
