    ─ transforming it into a state-of-the-art facility

The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) is being transformed into a state-of-the-art facility to handle Guyana’s rapidly growing air travel demands.

One of the airport’s most significant developments is the construction of Terminal 2, a landmark project that aligns with the government’s broader vision of positioning Guyana as a regional and global aviation hub.

Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, recently announced that the new 150,000-square-foot terminal is expected to be completed by 2028.

The project will be undertaken through a partnership between UK-based BHM Construction and the Manchester Airport Group, which will collaborate on the facility’s design and construction.

Terminal 2 is expected to be a game-changing addition to the airport, significantly enhancing the passenger experience through expanded concession areas, increased operational capacity, and modern amenities tailored to meet the country’s growing aviation needs.

President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali had emphasised that the investment goes beyond infrastructure development. He has noted that CJIA is poised to become a major aviation centre, driven by both government-led initiatives and private sector investments.

Complementing the construction of Terminal 2 are several other major projects currently underway at the airport.

These include relocating the air traffic control tower to the opposite side of the airfield, a move that will free up valuable space for additional aircraft parking.

The expansion comes in response to the airport’s rapid growth and increased traffic since 2020.

The airport is also set to benefit from a new inline baggage handling system equipped with additional scanners and cameras, as well as the introduction of off-site check-in services.

These upgrades are intended to streamline operations and provide a more seamless experience for travellers.

Further developments include a modern VIP lounge, upgraded tarmac facilities, and expanded administrative offices.

Collectively, these projects represent a major investment in Guyana’s aviation sector and reinforce the country’s ambition to establish CJIA as a premier gateway connecting Guyana with the world.
