President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali has pledged the government’s support for Guyana’s efforts to host next year’s Over-40s T20 World Cup, as the country welcomed 15 teams for the opening of the second International Masters Cricket Over-40s World Cup on Friday evening.
The opening ceremony was held at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence, where the President welcomed players, officials and supporters from participating countries and encouraged them to use the tournament to develop friendships and strengthen international ties.
President Ali described sport as a powerful platform for bringing people together, promoting cultural exchange and overcoming social inequalities.
“Sports is not only about a game; sports is about relationships. It is about bringing people together. It’s about fusing cultures. It’s about bridging inequalities. It’s about celebration of life, and this tournament speaks to those important elements of sports,” he said.
The competition features former international and national cricketers who continue to demonstrate their skills and commitment to the game despite being over 40 years old.
The President praised the participants for their dedication, noting that many had continued playing through their own investment of time, effort and resources. He said sport helps individuals remain competitive, mentally strong and focused while serving as an inspiration to their families, communities and countries.
He urged the teams to compete with enthusiasm, pride and sportsmanship, while taking advantage of the tournament to establish connections with fellow players, professionals and business representatives.
President Ali also encouraged visitors and their families to explore Guyana’s cultural heritage, experience its hospitality and consider returning in the future.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to sporting development, he assured organisers that the administration would provide support as they work towards bringing the Over-40s T20 World Cup to Guyana next year.
“If there is anything anyone on the team needs, just let us know. Minister Jacobs is here with you, and we will try our best to make your stay here as comfortable as you may want it to be,” the President told the visiting teams.
The tournament has attracted 15 teams, including defending champions South Africa, as well as Australia, New Zealand, England, the United Arab Emirates and the West Indies.
Matches commenced on Saturday at venues across Guyana. The West Indies team, led by former international wicketkeeper-batter Denesh Ramdin, was scheduled to face Australia at Providence from 09:30 hrs.
The regional squad also includes former West Indies players Ramnaresh Sarwan, Jason Mohammed, Narsingh Deonarine and Devendra Bishoo.
Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steven Jacobs credited President Ali’s leadership and the government’s investment in sporting infrastructure with helping Guyana attract international competitions.
He pointed to the country’s expanding sporting calendar, including the Global Super League, as evidence of its growing international profile.
“Guyana is definitely a sporting destination in 2026,” Minister Jacobs said, expressing appreciation for the President’s commitment to developing the sector.
The minister welcomed the participating teams and highlighted the tournament as an opportunity for former cricketers to continue representing their countries while competing at established sporting facilities.
He encouraged players to build relationships that extend beyond the cricket field and wished all participating teams success in the competition.
