Many Guyanese regard Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo as one of the country’s most trusted political leaders, citing his 12 years as President and his decades of public service. Supporters say he has earned a reputation for keeping his commitments and delivering on the promises he makes to communities.
During his engagement in Region Ten, Dr Jagdeo remained focused on announcing the government’s special housing programme for vulnerable citizens rather than responding to political attacks. Meanwhile, opposition leader Azruddin Mohamed has continued to raise issues surrounding the ongoing extradition case involving himself and his father, which is before the courts and will be decided through the legal process.
As soon as Azruddin and Nazar Mohamed are extradited to Miami, USA, the WIN party will be as dead as a dodo. Similarly, Aubrey Norton, the leader of PNC, is leading the party to an early grave. No one, including PNC members, knows what is going on inside PNC.
Meanwhile, Dr Jagdeo has continued to emphasise governance, development and democratic engagement by focusing on initiatives to improve the lives of Guyanese.
The Government of Guyana is preparing to introduce a new housing initiative to provide safe and secure homes for some of the country’s most vulnerable citizens and to accelerate efforts to clear housing backlogs and regularise land ownership across several regions by the end of 2027.
Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo announced the upcoming programme during Tuesday’s Public Day outreach in Linden, where he outlined the administration’s continued commitment to ensuring that every Guyanese has access to adequate housing.
According to the Vice-President, the initiative will focus on individuals unable to secure housing for themselves due to age, disability, abandonment, or extreme financial hardship. Under the programme, the government plans to build one-bedroom homes to meet these citizens’ needs, ensuring they have a safe and dignified place to live.
Dr Jagdeo explained that the housing programme is part of a broader national strategy to make home ownership and adequate shelter more accessible, while ensuring that vulnerable groups benefit alongside the country’s wider development.
In addition to housing, the government continues to strengthen its social protection network through the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security. These services include old-age pensions, public assistance for people with disabilities, financial support for individuals facing economic hardship, child protection services, and a range of other welfare programmes to improve the quality of life for those most in need.
The administration is also expanding measures to support Guyana’s growing senior population. Plans include expanding access to home-based care and improving healthcare delivery through telemedicine, mobile medical units, and virtual health services, particularly for elderly residents in remote and hinterland communities, where access to healthcare can be more challenging.
As outlined in Budget 2026, the government also intends to invest in improving elderly care infrastructure. This includes partnering with stakeholders to expand senior care facilities, building a new home for elderly citizens, and upgrading services and living conditions at the Palms Geriatric Home to deliver a higher standard of care for residents.
The residents of Region 10 were not swayed by Azruddin’s paid mob or by the appearance of a failed leader, Aubrey Norton. Despite opposition parties’ efforts to challenge or criticise the government’s agenda, Vice-President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo remains determined to improve the standard of living for the Guyanese people through continued development and social programmes.
The opposition parties are currently divided and politically weakened, and Guyanese citizens know that parties such as the WIN Party and the PNC Party face an uncertain future if they fail to offer a credible alternative to the electorate. Hence, Dr Bharrat Jagdeo is regarded by the residents of Region 10 as a safe pair of hands for Guyana’s economic development.
