Former US President Donald Trump’s declaration of a “framework deal” involving Greenland has been met with widespread scepticism, even as his decision to ease tariff pressures brought temporary relief to global markets. The announcement, made amid ongoing trade tensions, was light on concrete details and immediately raised concerns among European leaders and Greenlandic representatives about intent, transparency, and feasibility.

Trump suggested that the framework could pave the way for future cooperation on security and economic interests in the Arctic region. However, officials in Denmark and Greenland were quick to point out that no formal negotiations had taken place with Greenland itself. Greenlandic leaders reiterated that the island’s future is a matter of self-determination and cannot be discussed without their direct involvement. Many viewed the declaration as symbolic rather than substantive.

The scepticism was compounded by Trump’s broader diplomatic style, which has often relied on pressure tactics. While his decision to roll back or suspend certain tariff threats against European countries helped calm immediate trade anxieties and buoyed markets, European lawmakers remained cautious. Some argued that tariff relief should not be linked to sensitive geopolitical issues such as Greenland’s status.

Within Europe, reactions were mixed. A few leaders welcomed the de-escalation of trade tensions, seeing it as a pragmatic step to stabilise transatlantic relations. Others warned that the Greenland announcement risked undermining trust and inflaming regional sensitivities, particularly at a time when Arctic security and climate concerns require multilateral cooperation.

Overall, Trump’s Greenland framework declaration highlighted the gap between political messaging and diplomatic reality. While tariff relief offered short-term economic reassurance, the lack of clarity and consultation around Greenland ensured that doubts persisted, leaving many observers questioning whether the move marked genuine diplomacy or simply another headline-grabbing statement.
