U.S. President Donald Trump has stated that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the 2026 G20 Summit, triggering diplomatic unease and speculation about the future of U.S.–South Africa relations. Trump, speaking during a political address, claimed that South Africa’s “current policies and global alignments” do not align with the priorities he envisions for the G20 under his leadership. While he did not specify which policies he was referring to, his remarks come amid rising tensions over South Africa’s foreign policy stance, including its close association with BRICS partners and its criticism of certain Western positions on global conflicts. The South African government has not yet issued an official response, but diplomatic analysts warn that excluding a major African economy from the summit could strain international cooperation and undermine representation from the Global South. The announcement has also sparked debates within global political circles, as observers question how such a move might affect the cohesion and credibility of the G20 platform ahead of its 2026 session.
