Azruddin Mohamed’s claim that he wants to fight corruption flies in the face of common decency. This is so because the same Azruddin has been sanctioned by the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control.
According to the United States agency, Azruddin Mohamed evaded taxes to the tune of US$ 50, 000,000 (fifty million). If you cannot imagine how much that is, then you should know it is almost enough to build two fully equipped Regional Hospitals, or enough to pay the Because We Care cash grant to over 200,000 students.
The tax evasion amount is enough to pay the one-month bonus to the Disciplined Services for five years (at the current rate). The same amount could put an ambulance in every NDC in Guyana, or buy 75-100 high-end fire trucks.
It is ironic that Azruddin made his point at Sophia because it is so reminiscent of the Sophia Declaration, a notorious document that emerged from the utterly corrupt PNC (now APNU). Like the old PNC, Azruddin chose Sophia to put forth promises hatched in fantasy, but bound to end in ignominy.
Mohamed’s chimerical dance at Sophia is the outcome of a shocking disregard for the truth. Lies will entertain the vulnerable no doubt, but in the end, it is the liar who will also have the last laugh!
