Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has advised Rohit Sharma to consider retirement after being removed as India’s ODI captain. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently appointed Shubman Gill as the new captain ahead of the upcoming series against Australia, ending Rohit’s tenure during which he led India to three ICC finals, winning two titles.

Tiwary expressed that Rohit should think about stepping away from the game to preserve his dignity, stating, “A player like him doesn’t deserve this kind of humiliation.” He questioned the rationale behind the BCCI’s decision, suggesting that the board might not have long-term plans for the veteran opener.

In his first public appearance since the captaincy change, Rohit attended the 27th CEAT Cricket Rating Awards in Mumbai. Looking fit and composed, he reflected on India’s journey from the 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to victories in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. Rohit emphasized that the team’s success was a collective effort, highlighting the leadership of former head coach Rahul Dravid and the team’s unwavering belief.

Despite the captaincy change, Rohit remains part of India’s squad for the upcoming Australia series. At 36, he would be 41 during the 2027 ODI World Cup, prompting discussions about the need for younger leadership to ensure long-term success.

The BCCI’s decision has sparked mixed reactions. While some support the move as a step toward future planning, others, like Tiwary, feel it undermines the contributions of seasoned players like Rohit. As the Australia series approaches, all eyes will be on how the team adapts to the leadership change and how Rohit continues to contribute to Indian cricket.
