President Dr Irfaan Ali has extended heartfelt Maha Shivratri greetings to Hindus across Guyana, encouraging citizens to embrace reflection, humility and compassion as they observe the sacred festival.
In his message, the President described Maha Shivratri—revered as the Great Night of Shiva—as a time for profound spiritual contemplation. He said the observance calls on devotees to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings and to reflect on their personal journey towards enlightenment and inner liberation.
Highlighting Lord Shiva’s importance within Hindu belief, President Ali noted that the deity represents the forces of creation, preservation and dissolution. He explained that the festival offers an opportunity to meditate on the eternal cycle of life, renewal and transformation, while acknowledging the Divine as the ultimate source of power.

The Head of State reminded citizens that Maha Shivratri carries a deeper message about the limits of human strength and the Divine sovereignty over life and death. Recognising this truth, he said, fosters humility and reverence.
President Ali also acknowledged the traditional practices associated with the observance, including fasting, prayer, meditation and the chanting of sacred mantras. These acts of devotion, he stated, symbolise spiritual discipline, faith and surrender. Offerings made at temples further reflect love, gratitude and commitment to higher ideals.
Beyond its religious significance, the President underscored the moral teachings associated with Lord Shiva, particularly detachment from material excess and steadfastness in righteousness. In a world where prosperity and hardship coexist, he said the festival serves as a powerful reminder of the need for generosity and empathy.
He urged Guyanese to extend kindness to those in need, noting that even the smallest gesture of compassion can bring meaningful change. He added that acts of sharing and care help strengthen communities and contribute to national unity.

Expressing optimism for the nation, President Ali said he hopes the spirit of Maha Shivratri will inspire harmony, love and togetherness among all citizens. He wished that the wisdom and grace associated with Lord Shiva would guide Guyana toward greater peace and collective progress.
Maha Shivratri remains one of the most significant observances in the Hindu calendar and is traditionally marked by all-night vigils, prayers and devotion.
