Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, recently hinted at the upcoming launch of the Comet browser on iOS, signaling a potential new competitor to Apple’s Safari on iPhones. Srinivas made this announcement on October 6, 2025, through a post on X (formerly Twitter), responding to a user comment about replacing Safari with Perplexity AI in their iPhone dock. “Wait till Comet iOS is there! The first real competition to Safari begins then,” he wrote, suggesting that Comet could offer iPhone users a distinct and enhanced browsing experience.
Comet, an AI-powered browser developed by Perplexity, was initially launched in July 2025 as part of the $200/month Perplexity Max subscription plan. Following a highly successful beta period with millions of users on the waitlist, the browser was made freely available to all users in October 2025. Built on the Chromium framework, Comet integrates AI capabilities to help users with a variety of tasks, including summarizing web pages, managing emails, online shopping, and planning trips. These features aim to boost productivity and make multitasking more efficient for its users.
While all browsers on iOS are required to use Apple’s WebKit engine, Comet’s AI-powered functionalities may provide users with a unique experience that goes beyond conventional browsing. Srinivas’s recent comment suggests that Perplexity AI is actively preparing to bring these features to iOS, offering iPhone users a compelling alternative to Safari.
Currently, Comet is available on desktop platforms, and its iOS launch is highly anticipated by users who want an AI-enhanced browsing experience on their mobile devices. Although no official release date has been announced, Srinivas’s statements indicate that the launch may be imminent, opening new possibilities for AI-driven internet browsing on iPhones.
