Guyana’s Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Hon. Deodat Indar, continues to demonstrate strong leadership and unwavering dedication to national development by representing the country at the prestigious Routes Americas 2026 aviation summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. His active participation in the international forum reflects the Government of Guyana’s commitment to expanding global connectivity and strengthening the country’s position within the international aviation industry.
The three-day summit, which concluded on 5 March, brought together senior executives from airlines, airports, and tourism organisations across the Americas. The forum is one of the most important platforms for aviation stakeholders to discuss route development, build partnerships, and explore opportunities to expand global travel networks. Representing Guyana alongside Minister Indar were the Board Director of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation (CJIAC), Mr Sanjeev Datadin, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Mr Ramesh Ghir.
With a clear aim of expanding Guyana’s aviation footprint, Minister Indar and the Guyanese delegation took part in a series of high-level meetings throughout the conference. The Minister is scheduled to meet with representatives from 22 airlines and over 30 tourism boards and airport operators from across the region. These engagements are intended to strengthen relationships with international aviation partners and explore opportunities to increase both passenger and cargo traffic to and from Guyana.

The discussions are particularly significant given Guyana’s rapid economic transformation. As the country becomes one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, the demand for greater international connectivity has risen markedly. Consequently, expanding route networks and improving air access have become essential components of the government’s wider development strategy.
One of the key meetings during the summit involved discussions with representatives from Toronto Pearson International Airport. The meeting focused on exploring opportunities to support additional airlift capacity between Canada and Guyana. Enhanced connectivity between the two countries is regarded as an important step in strengthening tourism, business travel, and trade relations.
Chairman of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation, Mr Sanjeev Datadin, and CEO Mr Ramesh Ghir also participated in the dialogue, emphasising CJIA’s readiness to accommodate new routes and increased traffic. The discussions highlighted the airport’s expanding infrastructure and its growing role as a regional gateway connecting Guyana to major international destinations.
Minister Indar also participated in the “Spotlight on the Caribbean” panel discussion at the summit, where he outlined Guyana’s ambitious plans for aviation and infrastructure development. He explained that the government is making significant investments to modernise airports and improve service delivery to support the country’s evolving tourism industry.
The Minister noted that Guyana is actively developing a diverse tourism sector, including medical tourism, sporting events, and cultural activities. These initiatives, he said, are attracting growing international interest and opening new opportunities for economic growth. By improving air links and visitor experiences, the country aims to establish itself as a leading destination for global travellers and investors.
Another significant area highlighted by Minister Indar was the development of Guyana’s “Orange Economy,” which focuses on creative industries, arts, culture, and heritage. He explained that government investment in these sectors is helping to transform Guyana into a vibrant centre for artistic and intellectual exchange. These initiatives are expected to attract international cultural events and strengthen the country’s identity as a lively, diverse tourist destination.

During his remarks, Minister Indar also addressed regional fiscal policies affecting the aviation sector. He firmly opposed the introduction of a flat aviation tax across Caribbean nations. According to the Minister, such a policy could impose unnecessary burdens on airlines and travellers, potentially reducing accessibility and hindering regional connectivity.
Instead, he supported a balanced and data-driven approach to aviation taxation. Minister Indar highlighted that policies should be developed through consultations with airlines, airports, governments, and other stakeholders to ensure they remain fair and sustainable while fostering the growth of regional travel.
For Guyana, maintaining strong and efficient air connectivity is not just about transportation—it is a crucial pillar supporting the country’s broader economic development. As investments flow into sectors such as energy, infrastructure, tourism, and services, reliable international access becomes increasingly vital to sustaining growth.
Minister Indar’s enthusiastic participation at Routes Americas demonstrates his proactive leadership and dedication to achieving tangible results. Known for his strong work ethic, the Minister consistently emphasises the importance of fulfilling the promises outlined in the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) manifesto. His efforts in the Public Utilities and Aviation sectors demonstrate a clear focus on ensuring that government policies deliver genuine improvements for the country.
Under his leadership, the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation continues to advance projects to enhance infrastructure, improve service delivery, and support national development. Minister Indar has repeatedly stated that the success of these sectors is vital for improving the quality of life for citizens while ensuring that Guyana remains competitive within the global economy.
His participation at Routes Americas also demonstrates Guyana’s readiness to engage with international partners and establish itself as a key gateway between the Caribbean and South America. With modernised infrastructure, expanding airports, and growing investor confidence, the country is increasingly attracting attention from global aviation stakeholders.
As Guyana continues its upward trajectory, the efforts of Minister Deodat Indar and the team at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation are vital in shaping the future of the country’s aviation sector. Through strategic partnerships, innovative policies, and ongoing engagement with international stakeholders, Guyana is progressively strengthening its position within the global aviation network.
Minister Indar’s participation in Routes Americas 2026 showcases his dedication to maintaining Guyana’s global connectivity. Through perseverance, strategic planning, and strong leadership, he continues to work tirelessly to ensure the success of both the Public Utilities and Aviation sectors for the people of Guyana.
