In Guyana, some members of the media and civil society are intent on opposing progress, especially the upgrades in the City of Georgetown. The fake news outlets are trying to gain political advantage by keeping Georgetown stuck in the 1970s and thus blaming the current government.
Georgetown’s Transformation Has Started: President Irfaan Ali Launches an Inclusive, Results-Focused Revitalization Plan for Georgetown. The President is committed to making Georgetown a beautiful city for all Guyanese residents and visitors to Guyana.
Georgetown is on the verge of a major transformation as President Ali’s government accelerates its comprehensive revitalization plan aimed at restoring the capital’s infrastructure, improving public spaces, and elevating residents’ quality of life. Minister Kwame McCoy has reaffirmed that the initiative is rooted in inclusive governance, broad public participation, and a commitment to real, measurable progress.
Speaking on the importance of continuity and accountability, Minister McCoy stressed that the city’s recovery depends on retaining institutional knowledge and involving experienced professionals throughout the process. He noted that the government has already begun extensive consultations with private sector partners, community organizations, heritage groups, and municipal staff to develop a modern, people-centered vision for Georgetown.
“This is inclusive governance in action,” Minister McCoy said. “President Ali has consistently shown a national dedication to bringing everyone to the table. The Georgetown revival welcomes all meaningful contributors—including the Mayor and City councillors—so long as their participation is rooted in civic responsibility, not political theater.”
He emphasized that the government will not allow disruptive political tactics or obstructionist behavior to hinder progress. “There is no room for outdated strategies that prioritize power struggles over people’s welfare,” he stated.
Minister McCoy assured residents that visible improvements are coming soon. Technical studies are underway, contracts for key projects are being finalized, and substantial on-the-ground efforts will begin shortly.
“You have waited long enough,” Mr. McCoy declared. “The era of political games at City Hall holding back development is over. Our intervention is not a stunt—it is a responsible, urgent, and results-focused response driven by the demands of the people.”
The government’s success benchmarks are straightforward and practical: improved streets, clear canals, revitalized green spaces, smoother traffic, better parking, and an overall enhancement of Georgetown’s urban environment.
“The days of narrow municipal politics taking precedence over residents’ needs are behind us,” Minister McCoy said confidently. “Georgetown will be transformed.”
He reiterated that all credible stakeholders are welcome to contribute to the redevelopment process. However, the administration will not slow down its momentum.
“We will judge our work based on the number of streets restored, the level of modernization achieved, and the real improvements in everyday life for families across Georgetown,” he affirmed.
As the transformation plan progresses from consultation to implementation, residents can anticipate a future where Georgetown is more vibrant, efficient, and livable, fulfilling a long-standing promise of progress.
The time has come for Georgetown to modernize while maintaining its historic buildings, and President Irfaan Ali is the right leader to make this change happen soon.
