Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo Criticises Opposition for Claiming Credit on Gas-to-Energy Project
After initially labeling Guyana’s landmark gas-to-energy project as a “white elephant” destined for failure, the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) has now shifted its stance, asserting that the project was conceptualised during the tenure of the APNU+AFC coalition government.
The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) General Secretary, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, strongly criticized the opposition for its sudden narrative change. He highlighted the inconsistency, attributing the shift to the growing success and positive outlook surrounding the project’s future.
Guyana is embarking on an ambitious journey to redefine its energy landscape by launching a massive Gas-to-Energy Project. This initiative, poised to reshape the nation’s power generation capabilities, will feature an integrated facility housing a 300-megawatt power plant alongside a natural gas liquids (NGL) processing plant. The project promises to dramatically cut consumer electricity costs and reduce the country’s reliance on environmentally taxing fuel sources, setting the stage for a cleaner, more efficient energy future.
At the heart of this transformative endeavor is the shift from heavy fuel oil to natural gas, which is Guyana’s primary source of electricity generation. The dry gas extracted will be directly used to generate power, slashing energy costs for domestic users. Meanwhile, the NGLs, produced as by-products, will be commercialized, creating further economic opportunities for the nation.

The scale of this project cannot be understated. With a total cost estimated at US$1.8 billion, it marks a significant investment in Guyana’s infrastructure at a time when demand for electricity is rapidly growing. As the country experiences sustained economic expansion, the need for reliable and affordable energy has become more urgent. This project is seen as the linchpin in meeting that demand while also addressing the pressing need to curb environmental impacts.
Guyana’s reliance on heavy fuel oil for electricity generation has proven costly and environmentally detrimental. Heavy fuel oil is among the most polluting fuels used in power production, contributing to high emissions and escalating electricity prices. The Gas-to-Energy Project aims to address both critical issues by transitioning to natural gas.
“By transitioning to natural gas, the gas-to-energy project will reduce the country’s emissions while providing much-needed relief to consumers by cutting electricity costs by 50 percent,” stated project planners. This significant reduction in energy costs is expected to stimulate local economic growth, boost competitiveness, and improve the quality of life for the Guyanese population.
Another crucial component of the project is the integration of a natural gas liquids (NGL) processing plant within the facility. The NGLs, which include propane, butane, and other valuable by-products, will be refined and commercialized, potentially opening new revenue streams for the country. This commercialization of NGLs is expected to provide a further financial boon, making the project a win-win on both economic and environmental fronts.

Moreover, the switch to natural gas will contribute to a major reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Natural gas produces significantly fewer emissions than heavy fuel oil, making it a more sustainable option for electricity generation. This transition aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and adopt cleaner energy sources, positioning Guyana as a responsible player in the fight against climate change.
The scale of this transformation also reflects the government’s long-term vision for Guyana’s energy security. The Gas-to-Energy Project is more than just a response to current demand; it is a proactive step toward building a future where reliable, affordable, and clean energy is accessible to all Guyanese. The project is expected to have far-reaching impacts across industries, encouraging further investments and enhancing the nation’s standing as a key player in regional energy markets.
While the project represents a significant financial commitment, its long-term benefits outweigh its costs. Reducing emissions, improving energy reliability, and drastically lowering electricity costs for households and businesses are critical to Guyana’s ongoing development. The transition to natural gas is a step forward for energy generation and a path to a more sustainable and economically stable future.
Many countries are grappling with climate change challenges and rising energy costs, but Guyana’s Gas-to-Energy Project stands out as a bold, forward-thinking solution. The combination of clean energy, reduced costs, and new economic opportunities will likely make this project a benchmark for other developing nations.
With construction already underway, Guyana is on the brink of an energy revolution that promises a cleaner, more prosperous future for all. As the world shifts toward sustainable energy solutions, this landmark project solidifies Guyana’s commitment to both its citizens and the environment.
