U.S. law enforcement authorities have exposed the Mohamed family’s corrupt and criminal actions. We must not let these two Mohameds ruin the lives of 850,000 Guyanese to hide their criminal activities. It is an insult to Guyanese intelligence to have a political illiterate like Azruddin Mohamed as a presidential candidate.
Additionally, Reuters, a global news organization, has revealed that Nazar and Azruddin are involved in money laundering, gold smuggling, and invoice fraud. In other words, they are two international criminals.
While Guyana prospers under the leadership of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), a concerning faction is trying to seize power, led by Azruddin Mohamed, who has been sanctioned by the U.S. government. His father, Nazar (Shell) Mohamed, is also involved in a growing wave of criminal allegations, which are dragging their family-owned business — Mohamed’s Enterprise — into chaos due to federal investigations, financial fraud, and public disgrace.
Let’s be clear: this is more than just a political sideshow. It’s a national crisis of legitimacy, a threat to democracy, and a test of Guyana’s moral standing in the global community.
1. U.S. Sanctions and Federal Crimes: The Beginning of the Fall
In July 2024, Azruddin Mohamed was sanctioned by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). This was not a random act — it came after years of intelligence gathering by U.S. agencies. The allegations are serious: money laundering, smuggling, illicit gold trading, tax evasion, and links to transnational cocaine criminal networks.
OFAC stated that Mohamed and his family “engaged in widespread illicit financial activities that undermine the rule of law and democratic governance in Guyana.” His financial empire, operating under Mohamed’s Enterprise, is accused of serving as a front for criminal organizations, with revenues being routed through offshore accounts and shell companies.
The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is reportedly preparing an extradition case, and Interpol has been monitoring Azruddin Mohamed’s international movements.
This is the man who now wants to become President of Guyana.
2. Accused by U.S. Lawmakers: A Puppet of Maduro
Several U.S. Congress members have publicly claimed that Azruddin Mohamed is being used as a political pawn by Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, who aims to infiltrate Guyana’s democratic institutions. They see Mohamed not as a candidate, but as a deliberate tool for regional destabilization.
These accusations are made openly. Letters from congressional offices highlight the Mohamed family’s long history of suspicious financial activities, alleged ties to Venezuelan gold, and the use of Guyana as a route for laundering black-market assets.
The Congressional Caribbean Caucus even warned that Guyana must not “entertain the candidacy of criminals masquerading as philanthropists” — a not-so-subtle jab at Mohamed’s political outfit, WIN (We Invest in Narcotics).
Reports have surfaced linking Azruddin to dangerous international crime activities, including cocaine trafficking with Colombian cartels. Two U.S. Congress members, Carlos Gimenez and Maria Alvira Salazar, have publicly accused him of being a puppet of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro. These aren’t just rumors; they are claims backed by classified intelligence and diplomatic channels. When the U.S. Congress sounds the alarm, the world notices — except, it seems, for a few local newspapers in Guyana.
3. Dr Jagdeo Slams WIN: “A Desperate, Failed Ploy”

PPP/C General Secretary Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo has strongly condemned the attempt by APNU and other opposition groups to use WIN as a decoy party to siphon off votes from the PPP/C.
Speaking at Patentia Market Square, Dr Jagdeo said:
“They were hoping that he would split the PPP support, but that didn’t happen because the PPP support base is strong and resilient.”
Dr. Jagdeo’s remarks come amid rising suspicion that APNU’s plan to hijack WIN as a spoiler party has completely failed. Nomination Day revealed a concerning number of former APNU leaders and supporters now joining WIN, showing how divided and confused the opposition has become.
Furthermore, Dr. Jagdeo highlighted WIN’s complete lack of vision, criticizing Mohamed for hiding behind flashy online campaigns without providing a single development plan for Guyana. Mohamed still hasn’t hosted a press conference, released a concrete manifesto, or answered basic policy questions.
His standard reply? “Very shortly and soon.”
Is this leadership right for Guyana?
4. A Nation of Laws — or a Criminal Playground?
With U.S. sanctions against Nazar and Azruddin Mohamed, extradition requests looming, and a multitude of criminal allegations, the Guyanese government cannot afford to sit on its hands.
This is a defining moment: Will Guyana uphold the rule of law, or allow a criminally sanctioned individual to contest for its highest office? The legal and moral implications are severe.
A big hypothetical question: If Azruddin Mohamed is elected President, it could:
- Spark U.S. diplomatic retaliation against Guyana
- Guyana will be isolated from the world.
- Guyana will become a pariah country like Venezuela and North Korea
- Place Guyana on international financial watchlists
- Alienate international investors
- Stain Guyana’s growing reputation as a rising oil economy
- ALL those associated with the Mohameds will be sanctioned, and most of them do not understand that the USA is a superpower on earth.
- We must educate the voters that the OFAC AND FBI want the Mohameds, and sooner or later, they will be extradited to the USA to face the criminal activities. Do we want a criminal as a Presidential candidate?
All Guyanese political parties committed to genuine democracy must stand up and condemn Azruddin as a criminal, seeking lawful ways to prevent him from running for office. Doing so would be a victory for democracy and help avoid sanctions, especially from the USA, if Azruddin is elected by default. Although it may not happen, true parties need to voice their opinions about two individuals whom the United States has sanctioned.
We must not allow two political illiterates who are followed by paid illiterates to destroy our democracy. Many voters who took Mohamed’s money are laughing all the way to the bank or the Rum shop, and they told our reporters that they will never vote for an illiterate like Azruddin, who cannot even utter two sentences.
The U.S. Treasury has identified entities connected to Nazar Mohamed as high-risk for money laundering. If the extradition request moves forward, Nazar and Azruddin are also likely to be named as co-conspirators.
5. The People Demand Truth — and Action
Guyana is at a crossroads. The electorate deserves candidates of integrity, not those who spend more time dodging subpoenas than attending policy forums. The people want economic development, not drama: transparency, not traffic in contraband.
Dr. Jagdeo put it bluntly:
“Can you put your children’s future in the hands of people like him?”
That question must be answered not only by voters but also by the institutions responsible for defending democracy.
Final Word: Not Fit to Run, Not Fit to Lead
Azruddin Mohamed is not a political leader. He is a financial fugitive, a propaganda puppet, and a threat to national and regional security. His father, Nasar Mohamed, helped build a financial empire that is now falling apart under international scrutiny.
The PPP/C government has already demonstrated its position, supporting the law, progress, and the people.
Now the Guyanese state must show its resolve. The time has come to say it loud: No sanctioned criminal can be allowed to run for President of Guyana.
Let’s opt for a future of dignity, not disgrace.
