EPA Warns of Increased Fire Risks Across Guyana Amid Rising Temperatures

Georgetown, Guyana  – The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a public advisory warning residents of an increased risk of fires across Guyana as elevated temperatures and potentially drier environmental conditions create a greater threat of vegetation fires.

The agency explained that the conditions may be influenced by the El Niño climate pattern, which can result in above-average temperatures, reduced rainfall and dry vegetation, creating favourable conditions for fires to start and spread.

Prolonged periods of heat and reduced rainfall can make grasslands, forests and agricultural areas increasingly vulnerable to ignition.

Public Urged to Take Fire Prevention Measures

The EPA has encouraged residents to take precautions to prevent accidental fires and protect their communities.

Members of the public are advised to:

    • Avoid open burning, particularly during periods of extreme heat and dry weather.

    • Dispose of cigarettes and other flammable materials responsibly.

    • Keep surroundings clear of dry leaves, grass and other combustible materials.

    • Report suspected fires promptly to the relevant emergency authorities.

The agency stressed that even a small source of ignition can create dangerous conditions when vegetation is dry.

El Niño Conditions May Continue Into 2027

According to climate forecasts cited by the EPA, El Niño conditions are expected to persist into early 2027, with gradual weakening possible during the first half of the year.

The agency warned that elevated temperatures and reduced rainfall may continue to increase the likelihood of vegetation fires during this period.

The EPA will continue monitoring environmental conditions and satellite-detected heat anomalies and will provide further updates as necessary.

    Residents Asked to Report Bushfires

The EPA is encouraging members of the public to help protect the environment by reporting bushfires through its WhatsApp contacts:

    • +632-4614

    • +743-2441

Reports should include the location of the fire, such as the community, region, nearby landmark or a location pin, along with the date and time observed and a brief description.

Photographs and videos may also be submitted where they can be captured safely.

The agency cautioned residents never to approach a fire or enter smoke to obtain evidence. Anyone facing a fire that threatens lives or property should contact the Guyana Fire Service immediately.

The EPA reminded citizens that preventing fires is a shared responsibility and urged everyone to remain vigilant to protect lives, property, forests and the wider environment.
