The importance of preserving Guyana’s cultural and religious traditions while strengthening national unity was emphasised by Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, who is performing the functions of President, during the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha’s Deep Jale celebration on Wednesday evening.
Prime Minister Phillips, accompanied by his wife, Mignon Bowen-Phillips, attended the celebration at the Kitty Seawall Roundabout, where he extended Diwali greetings to the Hindu community and commended the Dharmic Sabha for its continued efforts to preserve Guyana’s religious and cultural heritage.

Delivering the key remarks, the PM noted that events such as Deep Jale provide opportunities for Guyanese from all walks of life to come together, appreciate one another’s traditions and strengthen the bonds of friendship and national unity.
Meanwhile, reflecting on the spiritual significance of Diwali, the prime minister highlighted its central message of the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance, noting that these principles extend beyond religious boundaries.

“Our diversity remains one of Guyana’s greatest strengths. Celebrations such as Deep Jale demonstrate how our cultural and religious traditions contribute to our shared national identity. They provide opportunities for us to learn from one another, strengthen friendships and appreciate the heritage that makes Guyana unique,” the prime minister said.
The acting president emphasised that as Guyana continues along its path of development and transformation, equal attention must be given to strengthening the relationships and values that unite its people.

He also encouraged those gathered to embrace the deeper meaning of Diwali by demonstrating kindness towards their neighbours, caring for those in need, and contributing to the continued peace and prosperity of the nation.

Also attending were Minister of Human Services and Social Security and President of the Guyana Hindu Dharmic Sabha, Dr Vindhya Persaud; Minister of Housing, Collin Croal; Minister within the Ministry of Housing, Vanessa Benn; members of the diplomatic community and other distinguished guests.
The evening featured the traditional lighting of diyas and cultural performances.
