The government invested $462.5 million in the first half of 2026 to strengthen Guyana’s agro-processing industry, as increased agricultural production drives expansion in processing, storage, and market access.
The investment represents more than half of the $745 million allocated for developing the agro-processing sector for 2026, with several key facilities either already operational or advancing across the country.
The major development is the full operationalisation of the new Agri-Business Hub at Bartica, which was completed at the end of 2025.
The facility is complemented by a Guyana Shop and cold storage facility, providing additional support for agro-business activities in communities within the region.
At Canal Number One, a new dehydrating facility was commissioned in April 2026, creating additional capacity to process and preserve agricultural produce and support the development of value-added products.
Meanwhile, the Regional Food Hub at Yarrowkabra is expected to be substantially completed by the end of 2026, while construction of a fruit pulping facility at Lethem is expected to commence during the year.
The investment is matched by efforts to strengthen the agro-processors’ capacity.
During the first half of 2026, more than 240 agro-business operators received training in packaging and labelling, agro-business development, food safety, contract negotiations and the use of preservatives.
A further 300 persons are expected to benefit from training during the second half of the year.
Market access for locally produced goods is also expanding through the Guyana Shop network.
During the review period, 152 additional products were made available through the Guyana Shop, expanding product lines to include pepper sauces, skin and hair products, meat marinades, seasonings, condiments and jellies.
The government also established five new Guyana Shop corners in Regions Four and Six, bringing the number of Guyana Shop corners operating across Guyana to 101, covering almost every administrative region except Region Eight, which is expected to be completed during the second half of 2026
Two additional corners are operating regionally in Bridgetown, Barbados.
The sector’s growing visibility was also demonstrated through the Uncapped event in August, which received government support and showcased more than 100 farmers and agro-processors.
