President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali is set to address the High-level Plenary Meeting on Addressing the Existential Threats Posed by Sea-level Rise on Thursday, as Guyana continues its engagement at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The meeting, scheduled for September 24 at United Nations Headquarters, will bring together Heads of State and Government to address the growing global threat posed by rising sea levels and the need for stronger international action to protect vulnerable coastal communities and countries.
President Ali’s participation comes as Guyana continues to highlight the importance of climate resilience and sustainable development, particularly as a low-lying coastal state.
On Tuesday, the president joined fellow Heads of State and Government for the opening session of the UNGA’s General Debate, held under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Alongside the high-level discussions, President Ali held bilateral talks with Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel al-Jubeir, at the Guyana Mission.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations and advancing investment cooperation, furthering Guyana’s efforts to deepen international partnerships.
President Ali also participated in a roundtable with private-sector and business leaders hosted by the Americas Society/Council of the Americas, where he highlighted Guyana’s economic growth and the expanding opportunities available across agriculture, mining, construction, ecotourism and financial services.
The president underscored the Government’s commitment to diversifying the economy, expanding public-private partnerships and ensuring the country’s economic transformation contributes to improvements in the livelihoods of all Guyanese.
The 81st UNGA General Debate is being held from September 22 to 26 and September 28, with world leaders convening around the theme of restoring trust, managing transformation and strengthening the United Nations’ ability to deliver for all.
