As Guyana continues to observe Amerindian Heritage Month 2026, the richness of Indigenous culture took centre stage at the Royal Ballroom, where the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs (MOAA) hosted its annual Dinner and Gala, Waikho Mukuta Khotan.

The event brought together government officials, members of the Indigenous community, stakeholders and the ten delegates competing for the coveted title of Miss Amerindian Heritage Queen 2026.

The pageant forms part of a month of activities dedicated to showcasing Guyana’s Indigenous heritage, traditions, talents and contributions to national development.

Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek said the annual dinner has grown into an important feature of the Heritage Month calendar, providing an opportunity to celebrate Indigenous identity while bringing communities together.

“Heritage Month is not only meant for partying but it’s a time for reflection, a time to honor our identities and pay homage to our heritage,” she said.

The minister also pointed to the significance of the evening as the ten delegates representing Guyana’s regions were formally introduced ahead of the national pageant.

According to Minister Browne Shadeek, the Amerindian Heritage Pageant has become a major national cultural event, supported by communities across the country.

“Our pageant is the largest pageant in Guyana and this is because of you, our supporters, and the villages, the communities of people who stand behind these strong women,” the minister said.

The pageant will provide another platform for Indigenous women to showcase their cultural knowledge, talents, confidence and connection to their communities, while promoting greater appreciation for the heritage of Guyana’s First Peoples.

The ten delegates will compete for the title of Miss Amerindian Heritage Queen on September 30 at the National Cultural Centre, bringing the month-long observances to a close.
