Residents of Wales are to benefit from improvements to the Wales Community Centre Ground, with the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport (MCYS) committing to address drainage and other critical issues affecting the facility.

The commitment was made during a meeting with Minister within the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Steven Jacobs, and residents.

Residents highlighted persistent flooding, an uneven playing surface, damaged fencing and other challenges that have limited the use of the ground for cricket, football, athletics and community activities.

Also in attendance was Minister within the Ministry of Agriculture Vikash Ramkissoon.

Ministers Steven Jacobs and Vikash Ramkissoon listen to concerns raised by residents of Wales on Wednesday evening

Minister Jacobs said the ground will be the immediate priority, while stressing that the drainage problem must also be addressed to ensure the investment is sustainable.

“The main thing is, right now, is making sure that we fix the ground so that you can utilise it,” he underscored.

The minister explained that repairing the playing surface will require careful planning, including time for the grass to recover.

He noted that the ministry will also examine the nearby multipurpose court so residents continue to have a recreational space while works are underway.

Minister Jacobs added that engineers will assess the facility and develop a holistic approach to its improvement, with the ministry also engaging the community and sporting organisations on the way forward.

The intervention is part of government’s efforts to upgrade community grounds across Region Three, expanding access to safe, functional spaces where residents, particularly young people, can participate in sports, recreation and community activities.

Meanwhile, Minister Jacobs also met with Belle West residents.

The condition and usability of community recreational facilities were raised with the Minister, who took note of their concerns.

He said the engagements are intended to ensure investments in sports infrastructure respond directly to needs identified by communities.
