More than 55,000 Guyanese received electronic passports during the first half of 2026, as the government continues to modernise the country’s identity and border-management systems.

The figure is contained in the 2026 Mid-Year Report, which outlines continued investments in digital identification and immigration services as part of efforts to improve security and make public services more efficient.

The report states that over 55,000 e-passports were issued between January and June, while the government is also moving to make passport services more accessible outside of Georgetown.

An online passport application and appointment system was launched in June, recording more than 500 users since becoming operational.

The system is intended to make the application process more convenient by allowing members of the public to initiate and manage passport-related services online.

Further decentralisation is also planned through Integrated Government Service Centres before the end of the year, allowing more citizens to access passport services closer to where they live.

Alongside the expansion of e-passports, Guyana is continuing the rollout of its national electronic identification system.
