Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc. is intensifying its monitoring of major electricity infrastructure projects to ensure they are completed efficiently and on schedule.

A senior GPL team, led by Executive Management Committee Head Kesh Nandlall, held discussions with several leading contractors involved in the country’s ongoing electricity development programme. The meetings included representatives from InterEnergy, PowerChina, China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMC) and Kalpataru Projects International Ltd. (KPIL).

The engagements provided an opportunity for the contractors to report on the current status of their assignments, including completed work, outstanding activities, expected milestones, and projected timelines.

GPL management also examined obstacles that could slow implementation and emphasised the importance of closer collaboration among the utility, contractors and other stakeholders. Particular attention was given to resolving operational and logistical issues quickly so that construction and upgrade activities could proceed without unnecessary delays.

The projects are part of GPL’s wider effort to modernise and expand Guyana’s electricity infrastructure. The programme is expected to strengthen the national grid, improve system stability and resilience, and enhance the utility’s ability to deliver a more reliable electricity supply.

The increased supervision comes at a time when Guyana’s rapidly expanding economy is driving higher electricity demand. With consumption expected to continue rising, significant investment in generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure will be necessary to ensure the power system can support both existing users and future development.

GPL’s ongoing consultations with project contractors are therefore expected to play an important role in maintaining momentum, identifying potential bottlenecks early, and ensuring that major infrastructure investments translate into tangible improvements for consumers.

The utility has indicated that sustained project monitoring and stronger coordination will remain key priorities as Guyana works to build a more reliable, resilient and modern national electricity network.
