President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali toured Hydronie Market in Region Three on Sunday and announced that vendors will soon have shed facilities on both sides of the compound.

Vendors previously worked from the congested street. They now sell comfortably from a shed on one side of the compound following an earlier government investment that included improved drainage.

“We pass through the market, [and] the people are very happy with the new shed at the back. They’re very happy with the shed in the middle [and] with the improved drainage,” President Ali said in a video posted on his social media page.

Vendors in the section without the upgrade have been requesting the same improvements. In response, the head of state said the government will now extend the same drainage and shelter work to that side of the market.

The additional shed facilities will bring greater comfort to vendors

He said funding for the project is being transferred to the region, and the region will shortly advertise for contractors. President Ali added that construction should start within six to eight weeks.

When complete, the project will give vendors covered, well-drained shed space across the entire market.
