Residents of Port Mourant and surrounding communities are already enjoying the new bottle refilling station at the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Water Treatment Plant.
The facility is part of the government’s efforts to expand access to safe and affordable drinking water while ensuring residents can refill their bottles closer to home.
Director-General of the Ministry of Public Utilities and Aviation, Alfonso De Armas, said on Monday the station will provide a convenient service, particularly for residents who would otherwise have to travel significant distances to access refilling facilities.
During a visit to the facility, De Armas pointed to an elderly resident who had arrived with an empty bottle to collect water.
“I just watched an elderly lady ride up with an empty water bottle and get it filled right here at this station. Now imagine how far she would have had to go, ride or walk, to get that water bottle refilled,” he highlighted.
He said the incident underscored the importance of making basic services accessible to communities.
“That is the idea behind stations like this to keep prices stable and provide an efficient, safe and above all, accessible way to get one of the most important things in our lives – water,” De Armas said.
The government plans to establish similar bottle refilling stations in communities countrywide as part of efforts to improve access to potable water.
