Minister of Human Services and Social Security has been elected to the executive body of the Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM) of the Organisation of American States (OAS), marking its return after 24 years.
The election was confirmed during the historic 40th Assembly of Delegates held in Washington, D.C., where ministers and gender authorities from across the hemisphere convened to advance policies on women’s economic empowerment, labour force participation, and leadership.
The CIM is the OAS’s principal body dedicated to promoting women’s human rights and gender equality across the Americas.

Dr Persaud, who served as Guyana’s principal delegate at the Assembly, will now sit on the Commission’s executive body for the 2026–2029 term, positioning Guyana at the centre of hemispheric decision-making on gender policy.
Guyana’s successful return places it among four CARICOM countries now serving on the executive body—the strongest Caribbean representation ever achieved within the CIM. The newly elected committee will be chaired by Uruguay.
Dr Persaud’s election reinforces Guyana’s growing leadership role in advancing regional priorities, including economic equity, digital inclusion, and expanding opportunities for women in leadership.
As a member of the executive body, Minister Persaud will contribute directly to shaping regional strategies and programmes addressing critical issues affecting women, while ensuring Caribbean priorities are reflected in the Commission’s agenda.
Guyana’s return comes amid sustained national efforts to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment, including expanded economic opportunities, strengthened protections, and increased female participation in leadership.
These advancements have positioned Guyana as an emerging leader in gender-responsive development within the Caribbean, with Dr Persaud’s election reflecting growing international recognition of the country’s progress.
