    – In keeping with the government’s commitment to safe, well-lit communities

The government will roll out the installation of 90,000 streetlights and 2,000 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras nationwide in the coming months, ensuring families live in well-maintained communities and travel on well-lit roads.

Vice President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Monday confirmed that the streetlights are already in the country, and the government is moving to install them across communities.

The street lighting programme is a critical component of the government’s efforts to bolster public safety. By improving visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians, the initiative aims to reduce the frequency of road accidents.

Meanwhile, CCTV cameras are being installed under the Safe Country initiative, which is a comprehensive, technology-driven security programme aimed at transforming national security through digital surveillance and intelligence-driven policing.

These initiatives align with the government’s broader commitment to building safer communities as outlined in its 2025 Manifesto.

The streetlights and CCTV cameras are being complemented with investments in concrete drains and recreational spaces.

“A lot of these things we promised,” the vice president stated.
