The Guyana Manufacturing and Services Association (GMSA), in collaboration with local bottled water producers, recently held high-level discussions with the Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation, Deodat Indar, and senior officials from Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI). The meeting focused on addressing key challenges and unlocking new opportunities within Guyana’s water-manufacturing sector.
In a statement issued on Friday, the GMSA expressed strong support for the initiative led by President Irfaan Ali to achieve full local production of bottled water (HS Code 2201). The association described this goal as a significant step towards national self-reliance, noting that it could reduce imports by approximately G$150 million. Such a shift, the GMSA highlighted, would strengthen domestic manufacturing and contribute meaningfully to the country’s economic growth.

Industry stakeholders at the meeting emphasised the importance of a coordinated, unified approach among producers, regulators, and policymakers. Ensuring consistent quality standards across the sector was highlighted as a priority, especially as Guyana prepares to compete both regionally and internationally.
The discussions also provided a platform to examine several key issues affecting the industry. These covered challenges related to production capacity and distribution networks, the need for supportive policy frameworks, opportunities for investment incentives, and the significance of maintaining rigorous quality assurance and regulatory compliance.
Reaffirming its commitment, the GMSA stated it will continue working closely with the government and other stakeholders to develop a more resilient and competitive bottled water industry. The association highlighted that a focus on high standards and innovation will be essential as Guyana seeks to expand its presence in the global market while meeting domestic demand.
