Government Member of Parliament (MP) Alister Charlie has thrown his full support behind Budget 2026, describing it as a people-centred and transformative intervention that significantly advances Amerindian and hinterland development across Guyana.

“I stand in full support of this people-centred, transformative, and inclusive budget, one that builds on the achievements of previous years and lays the foundation for sustainable national development,” MP Charlie stated.

Making his contribution to the ongoing budget debates, MP Charlie praised the budget, noting that it reflects the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Government’s commitment to growth, equity and inclusion.

He strongly defended the flagship social interventions, including the “Because We Care” cash grant, which he said reaches every schoolchild nationwide.

The MP highlighted substantial investments made in Region Seven and other hinterland communities between 2020 and 2025, citing a total government intervention of $337.3 million.

He pointed to targeted support for villages such as Kako, which received $72 million through the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) over three years, alongside additional allocations from supplemental budgets and capital projects under the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.

MP Charlie also outlined continued investments in education, housing, water, electricity, and solar energy projects, stressing that development is actively taking place across hinterland and Amerindian communities.

Looking ahead, MP Charlie outlined that $7.5 billion has been earmarked in Budget 2026 alone for Amerindian and hinterland development. This includes funding for land titling, the Amerindian Development Fund, Presidential grants, the Community Service Officer (CSO) Programme, and the Hinterland Scholarship Programme, which is expected to benefit 800 students.

He also reaffirmed government support for school construction, health facilities, water systems, and the preservation of Amerindian heritage.

The parliamentarian concluded by endorsing the $1.5 trillion budget as a historic investment in Guyana’s future and urged all MPs to support what he described as a serious development intervention that puts people first.
