The Ministry of Education, led by Sonia Parag, has initiated a significant reform of the National School Feeding Program, demonstrating a renewed commitment to enhancing child nutrition, improving food quality, and making sure that every student benefits from a dependable and health-conscious system.

Minister of Education Sonia Parag announced that the nationwide reassessment aims to strengthen the program’s foundations—making it more accountable, more consistent, and better aligned with the nutritional needs of students across Guyana.

Minister Parag explained that soon after taking office in September, she held detailed discussions with the School Feeding Unit to review daily operations and pinpoint areas needing immediate improvement. “This review is not just routine—it is a strategic and operational effort to ensure that the program delivers the impact we envision for our children,” she said.

As part of the overhaul, the Ministry has partnered with the Carnegie School of Home Economics to create a modernized, more nutritious menu for students. This new strategy emphasizes balancing nutritional value with sustainability, making sure that meals are both healthy and meet consistent standards.

The Education Minister also responded to concerns raised by the public, including reports circulating on social media. She reaffirmed that every complaint will be taken seriously and resolved quickly. “We will act with urgency and fairness,” she assured, emphasizing that quality control and accountability are non-negotiable.

“There will be absolutely no compromise on the health and well-being of our children,” Minister Parag emphasized. She stressed that suppliers and partners must uphold the Ministry’s standards if they want to stay part of the program.

Headteachers, who serve as the first line of oversight, have been reminded of their responsibility to report issues promptly. Their role is key to ensuring the consistency and safety of the meals provided.

This comprehensive review is a vital part of the Ministry’s larger goal to improve child nutrition, enhance academic achievement, and ensure every child—regardless of location or background—has access to a safe, nutritious, and reliable school feeding system.
