Rohit Sharma as ODI Captain Could Have Disturbed Team Culture, Says Report

In a surprising revelation, a recent report has suggested that handing the ODI captaincy back to Rohit Sharma could have “disturbed the team culture,” sparking fresh debate in Indian cricket circles. The claim comes just weeks after Shubman Gill was backed to lead India in the 50-over format, a decision many saw as a clear move toward the future.

According to the report, the selectors and team management were concerned that reinstating Rohit Sharma as skipper in ODIs might create uncertainty in the dressing room. The reasoning, it added, was to maintain continuity and avoid unsettling the balance that has been carefully built in recent months.

Rohit Sharma, who led India to the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, remains one of the most accomplished captains in modern cricket. However, with the next World Cup still several years away, the leadership group appears to be looking beyond the veteran opener.

The report further noted that the decision was not about Rohit’s ability but about safeguarding the team’s long-term culture. “The idea was to give clarity to players. If Rohit was brought back as captain in ODIs, it would have disturbed the dressing room culture. A transition is underway, and stability is key,” the source was quoted as saying.

Meanwhile, young opener Shubman Gill has been entrusted with the responsibility of shaping India’s ODI side in the coming years. Former players like Harbhajan Singh have already voiced their support, praising Gill’s temperament and vision for the future.

With Rohit Sharma expected to continue as captain in Tests and T20Is for the time being, Indian cricket now finds itself in a unique phase of split leadership—one that balances the experience of veterans with the energy of the next generation.

As the debate continues, the question remains: will this bold move solidify India’s team culture, or will the absence of Rohit Sharma at the ODI helm be felt in the years ahead?
